The northern city center is a district of the Halle district in the Mitte district of Halle (Saale) . It is partly nestled around the old town quarter and exactly covers the urban area between the streets Mühlweg, Pfälzer Straße, Ankerstraße, Herrenstraße, Hallorenring, Robert-Franz-Ring, Moritzburgring, Universitätsring, Joliot-Curie-Platz, Hansering, Am Leipziger Turm , At the orphanage wall, Franckestrasse, Riebeckplatz , Volkmannstrasse, Berliner Strasse and Ludwig-Wucherer-Strasse. The city of Neumarkt, which was incorporated in 1817, was located on part of the northern inner city.
The city of Halle also has the Charlottenviertel, the Medizinerviertel, the Steintorviertel, the Bebelviertel, the Neumarktviertel and the part of the Klaustorvorstadt east of the Saale as so-called area names for the northern inner city. City quarters designated.
The city quarter is characterized by dense buildings from the 19th century. Public squares and green spaces in this quarter are the University Botanical Gardens , the City Park, and the Steintor and Joliot-Curie-Platz squares. In the area of the district there are numerous facilities of the Martin Luther University , the University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt , the Leopoldina building , the former city high school , the opera house and the Stadtgottesacker from 1529.
history
The city of Neumarkt, incorporated in 1817, was located on part of the northern inner city. It was only separated from the city of Halle by a wall and comprised the following area: Ulrichstor - Saale - corridor border to Giebichenstein - Heilig-Geist-Tor - church gate. In the area were u. a. the (Heilig-) Geiststrasse, Breite Strasse, Fleischerstrasse, Grosse and Kleine Wallstrasse. Neumarkt was divided into the following four quarters: Vogteiviertel, Herzogliches Viertel, Ulrichsviertel and beinhauerviertel. As a media city, Neumarkt belonged to the hall circle of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg . In 1680 the city and the Saalkreis became part of the Duchy of Magdeburg under Brandenburg-Prussian rule.
During the French occupation (1807 to 1813) Neumarkt was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. The city was the capital of the canton of Neumarkt . Neumarkt has been part of Halle since 1817. Today a primary school in the district bears the name “Neumarkt-Grundschule”. The short Neumarktstraße runs between Geiststraße and Harz (street name). Also the name of a city quarter within the northern inner city is Neumarkt.

In the northern inner city district, 17,377 people are registered as having their main residence (as of December 31, 2016). At 6.6%, the proportion of foreigners is significantly higher than in Halle as a whole (3.6%). In contrast to other city districts and quarters, the population decline since 1993 has been relatively moderate at 2.2%.
elections
In the 2004 local elections, voter turnout in the northern inner city district was 36.9%, slightly lower than in Halle as a whole (38.7%). The result in detail: CDU 20.1%, SPD 17.0%, PDS 17.7%, FDP 5.7%, Greens 12.0%, others 27.5%.
