The old town , part of the Halle district in the Mitte district , is the oldest part of Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt . It has 5,964 inhabitants (December 2017). The old town, which covers an area of ​​0.63 km², is bounded by the city ring. It covers the area between the streets Moritzburgring, Robert-Franz-Ring, Hallorenring, Moritzzwinger, Waisenhausring, Hansering, Joliot-Curie-Platz and Universitätsring.

The district has a large collection of monuments from the most varied of epochs, from the Gothic period to the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism up to the Wilhelminian era. Formerly it was surrounded by a city wall with fortifications, some of which now form a promenade ring.
