Bartolomeo Passarotti (born June 28, 1529 in Bologna , † June 3, 1592 in Rome ) was an Italian painter and etcher of the Renaissance .

Life

In 1551 Passarotti left his place of birth for Rome. Here he worked with Taddeo Zuccari and Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola . He returned to Bologna in 1565 and opened his own workshop. He became a follower of the Venetian school, which, in contrast to Florentine mannerism, emphasized colors. As a teacher of Agostino Carracci, Passarotti mainly painted portraits and still lifes , but also works on religious topics that can be seen in important churches in Bologna and already point to the art of the Baroque . In his portraits there are already signs of a new artistic beginning, a new overall conception of the portrait, which nevertheless remains true to the traditions developed in the art of the Renaissance. He was artistically influenced by Antonio da Correggio and Parmigianino . Passarotti is regarded as the most important portraitist of Bologna towards the end of the 16th century, who combines an attractive color treatment with a very lively art of characterization in his works.
