Taddeo Zuccari , also Taddeo Zuccaro or Taddeo Zucchero , (* 1529 in Sant'Angelo in Vado near Urbino , † 1566 in Rome ) was an Italian painter and a main exponent of Mannerism .

Life

Zuccari was born in 1529 as the son of the largely unknown painter Ottaviano Zuccaro , who taught him. His brother Federico was born around 1540 . With the support of his father, Zuccari went to Rome in 1543 at the age of fourteen. Zuccari was able to win over a number of wealthy clients and soon earn his living as frescoes and sgraffitimal artists in churches and palaces. Among his customers were the Popes Julius III. and Paul IV , together with Prospero Fontana he worked on the decoration of the Villa Giulia . In 1556 he created the frescoes in the Cappela Mattei , a side chapel of the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione , which depict the story of the Passion . The frescoes are reminiscent of the works of Francesco Salviatis , Girolamo Muzianos , Sebastiano del Piombos and Daniele da Volterras .

His main work is the decoration of the state rooms in the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola . Together with his brother, he created a number of important frescoes around 1559, which both portray historical people and tell the story of the Farnese family . In 1565 he completed the decoration of the Sala dei Fasti in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

Zuccari died in Rome in 1566, he was buried in the Pantheon near the tomb of Raphael .
