geography

Caprarola is 57 km northwest of Rome and 21 km southeast of Viterbo . The place is located on the south-eastern slope of the Monti Cimini east of Lake Vico , the northern half of which belongs to the municipality. Most of the Riserva Naturale del Lago di Vico , established in 1982, also belongs to the municipality. The Monti Cimini are a low mountain range that formed volcanically 4.5 million years ago. The Vico lake is located in an extinct caldera . After the last eruptions about 100,000 years ago, the crater gradually filled with both groundwater and rainwater. The Monti Cimini and thus also Caprarola are among the areas with the most rainfall in Lazio (up to 850 mm per year).

Caprarola is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini . It bears the Bandiera Arancione , a seal of quality in the field of tourism and the environment from the Touring Club Italiano (TCI).

The neighboring communities are Canepina , Carbognano , Nepi , Ronciglione , Vallerano , Vetralla and Viterbo .

traffic

Caprarola is accessed from the provincial road SP 1 Via Cimina, part of the Via Francigena from Viterbo to Monterosi ( Via Cassia ). It had a station on the Civitavecchia-Orte railway line , which was closed in 1994, but is to be restored after a decision by the Lazio region on February 6, 2009.

history

Caprarola was first mentioned in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages it was disputed between the Counts Di Vico and d'Anguillara. With the establishment of the Duchy of Castro , the Farnese family began to fortify the border town. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese had the Palazzo Farnese built on the foundations of the fortress from 1559 . The site was completely rebuilt and aligned axially with the palace.

The name Caprarola is derived from the Italian name for goat barn.
