Paul Bril (* 1553 /54 in Breda , † 7. October 1626 in Rome ) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Paul Bril was a student of the painter Damiaen Wortelmans . In 1582 he moved to Rome to live with his brother Mathijs Bril , where he continued to teach him. Paul Bril painted landscapes in fresco and oil and marks a significant advance in this art by striving more than previous painters towards uniform lighting. His treatment was a little dry at first but broadened through the influence of the Italians. But he always retained the colder, bluish- greenish hue in the coloring and the execution of the composition in the style of the Dutch painters. He mainly painted religious representations, landscapes , navies , battles and allegories . He also erased various sheets. His works can be found in all galleries around the world.

Many painters in Rome were influenced by Paul Bril, such as Adam Elsheimer , Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Bartholomeus Breenbergh . He worked with Johannes Rottenhammer , who composed the figures in Bril's landscapes and painted figural scenes to which Bril added the landscapes. This work-sharing approach was quite common among painters in Rome at the time.
