In painting, color refers to the selection, harmony , shading and composition of the various colors in a painting . The coloring describes the overall color impression of a picture, a photograph or a view. In the context of color type theory , this means the interplay of innate skin undertone, eye color and hair color . Color is also used for carpets.

The word color is often used as a metaphorical description of a culture or way of life in a region or area (see also local color ). In this sense, the term is also used in other arts, such as music and literature. The coloring of a score (such as Puccini's Madama Butterfly ) plays an important role, particularly in music and music theater of the late 19th and early 20th centuries .

For the term coloring, Philipp von Zesen created the German word “color scheme”.

The term comes from Italian. In other words, it is the harmony of colors in a painting and their artistic effect.
