Canepina is an Italian commune with 3032 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region .

geography

Canepina is 68 km north of Rome and 16 km east of Viterbo . The place is located on the eastern slope of the Monti Cimini east of Lake Vico . The Monti Cimini are a low mountain range that formed volcanically 4.5 million years ago. The Vico lake is located in an extinct caldera .

Canepina is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini .

The neighboring municipalities are Caprarola , Soriano nel Cimino , Vallerano and Viterbo .

Place name

The name Canepina is derived from Canapa (hemp). Until the 17th century, hemp was mainly grown around the place.

history

Numerous finds prove that the area was inhabited since the Etruscan period. Canepina was first mentioned in a document in 1093. At that time, the Viterbo commune gave the place to the Pope. In 1534 Pope Paul III gave Canepina to his son Pier Luigi II Farnese , who incorporated it into his Duchy of Castro . In 1649, after the destruction of Castro, it fell back to the Papal States .

The coat of arms shows a golden crown and two crossed green palm branches on a red shield. Both point to the martyrdom of the local saint Santa Corona . The crown as a talking coat of arms (Corona = crown), the palm branches as a reminder of martyrdom. Corona is said to have been stretched between two palm trees and so torn.

A specialty is Fieno di Canepina (hay from Canepina), particularly finely chopped egg noodles.

Chestnuts are the most important agricultural product. Around 25,000 quintals of chestnuts are produced annually on 1,500 hectares of cultivated land. In October the Giornate della Castagne (Days of the Chestnut) are celebrated. Canepina is a member of the Città del Castagno (City of Chestnut) association.
