Calcata is a municipality with 907 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio .
geography
Calcata is 43 km north of Rome and 51 km southeast of Viterbo . It is located in the volcanic hill country of southern Tuscia with its deeply carved valleys, the historical landscape of the Falisker . Calcata consists of the districts Calcata Nuova and the medieval Calcata Vecchia, which lies spectacularly on a rock spur above the steep Treja Valley. Calcata is the center of the Valle del Treja Natural Park.
Calcata is connected to the trunk road network via Strada Stadale 2 Via Cassia , exit Sette Vene .
The neighboring municipalities are Faleria , Magliano Romano ( RM ), Mazzano Romano (RM) and Rignano Flaminio (RM)
Calcata bears the Bandiera Arancione , a quality seal in the field of tourism and the environment from the TCI .
history
Calcata is mentioned for the first time in a document from the time of Pope Hadrian I (772-795). It came into the possession of the Anguillara aristocratic family, who enclosed the place with a city wall in the 13th century and built the Castello Baronale.
The history of Calcata is closely related to the history of the relic of the Holy Foreskin .
