geography

Bassano Romano is located in the Monti Sabatini between Lake Bracciano and Lake Vico .

history

The place, which was founded at an unknown time in the High Middle Ages, was transferred to the Counts of Anguillara as feudus Bassani after several changes of ownership in 1428 . After a brief loss in 1490, the Orsini-Anguillara bought it back in 1492. In June 1595 the Genoese Giustiniani family bought it for 55,000 Scudi and expanded the large local palace. Pope Paul V (1605–1621) raised Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564–1637) to Marchese of Bassano in 1605, Pope Innocent X (1644–1655) raised his nephew Andrea († 1667) to prince on November 21, 1644 because this one Had married the Pope's niece. In 1854 the Odescalchi princes bought the Baronal Palace for 150,000 Scudi, which was temporarily occupied by German troops in the autumn of 1944 during the Second World War . The place, until then called Bassano di Sutri, was renamed Bassano Romano in 1964.

Attractions

  • Palazzo Giustiniani-Odescalchi in the center of the village. State-owned since 2003, the building has not yet been fully restored. The compact building, especially operated by Vincenzo Giustiniani from 1605, is adorned with four Roman busts on high bases in front of the main facade. The interior is characterized by remarkable frescoes in the rooms of the representative floor and the open loggia, created by important artists, including Domenichino . We would like to highlight four seasonal rooms with a vedute by Bassano, the Parnassus room with vedute from Genoa and Chios , the room of Diana with scenes from her mythology , the large gallery with the ceiling painting of the fall of Phaethon in the presence of the ancient world of gods and the room of the Eternal Happiness with ceiling fresco of this theme and stucco decoration. The former garden of over 20 hectares, which can be reached via a bridge, is still awaiting complete restoration. In the middle there is a casino for the hunt, called Rocca, with once five small towers according to the Giustiniani coat of arms, of which only the middle one has been preserved.
  • Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta right next to the palace in the Baroque version from 1703 with a handsome two-tower facade, uniformly baroque three-aisled interior, transept and paintings from the renovation period as well as a painted main altar with the Assumption of Mary from the 20th century.
  • Church of Santa Maria della Pietà at the east end of the corresponding street, built under Andrea Giustiniani, with a single nave interior; Main altar with painting of the patron saint and ceiling fresco depicting the Assumption of St. Filippo Neri , accompanied by the Odescalchi coat of arms.
  • Oratorio della Santissima Trinità with a single nave interior and a baroque main altar with a fresco of the Assumption of Mary and a standard from 1683 painted on both sides.
  • Church of San Gratiliano in the north of Bassano from 1546 with a cycle of frescoes in folk style from the story of the titular saint.
  • Church of Santa Maria dei Monti from 1749 at the southwest end of Giustiniani Park with frescoes and a Madonna and Child.
  • Church of San Vincenzo Martire northwest of the town center, a magnificent example of high baroque architecture with a distinctive two-tower facade. Consecrated by Pope Innocent X during his visit to Bassano in 1646, it served as the mausoleum of the Giustiniani of Bassano. In the interior with side chapels, transept and dome in the sacristy chapel there is a marble statue of Christ holding the cross, which, according to recent research, is said to be the first version of the Risen Christ by Michelangelo Buonarotti . The second version is in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. The Silvestrini Benedictine monastery surrounding the church dates from the 1950s.
