Affenstein Castle is located near Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Geographical location

The castle site is believed to be on the hard-to-reach, southwestern steep drop of the Rheingrafenstein . It is about 230  m above sea level. NN halfway between the Rheingrafenstein Castle and the Nahe . It therefore belonged to the category of hillside castles and was probably a bailey of Rheingrafenstein Castle.

history

A documentary mention of Affenstein Castle ("Affensteine under Ringravensteine") is only known from 1426. There the castle is named as the Affensteine under Ringravensteine . Henne von Lonsheim and Johann von Wonsheim are named as partial owners of the castle, which is under the fief of the Rhine county. Nothing is known about the destruction of the castle, but it is likely to be related to the destruction of Rheingrafenstein Castle in 1688.

State of preservation

The few remaining remains of the wall are made from rubble stones. A visit is difficult due to the topographical location.
