Rheingrafenstein
The Rheingrafenstein is a 136 m high porphyry rock formation on the Nahe opposite Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg .
Geologically it belongs to the Kreuznach massif. The ruins of Rheingrafenstein Castle , which was built in the 11th century and destroyed during the Palatinate War of Succession in 1688, stand on its top . The Rheingrafenstein is the landmark of the city of Bad Münster am Stein. A little below is the Affenstein castle ruin . A 200 hectare area around the rock formation was declared a nature reserve in 1985 .
Coming from Bad Münster am Stein, the Rheingrafenstein can be reached via a footpath after having crossed the Nahe by means of a hand-drawn passenger ferry . Alternatively, there is the option of following Rheingrafenstraße via Bad Kreuznach, to a nearby car park and to hike to the castle and the viewing platform.
