Ischia di Castro is an Italian commune with 2235 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region . Until 1872 the municipality was called Isola di Castro .

geography

Ischia is 116 km northwest of Rome and 40 km northwest of Viterbo . The medieval town center is located on an elongated tuff hill on the southwest slope of the Monti Volsini southwest of Lake Bolsena . The municipality has a share in the Selva del Lamone Natural Park . The municipality extends over a height of 73 to 515 m slm

The neighboring municipalities are Canino , Cellere , Farnese , Manciano ( GR ), Pitigliano (GR) and Valentano .

The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).

Salvatore Serra ( PdL ) was elected mayor in June 2009. He won the election against his predecessor Pietro Bartoccini (2004-2009). His center-right list also has a majority in the local council with 8 out of 12 seats.

Attractions

The ruins of Castro , the capital of the Duchy of Castro , destroyed and abandoned in 1649, are located 12 km west of the town center.
