Canino is a municipality in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio with 5236 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Canino is on the edge of the Monti Volsini between Lake Bolsena and Tuscania . It belongs to the Maremma Laziale. Canini is 111 km northeast of Rome , 130 km south of Siena and 42 km west of Viterbo . The municipality extends over a height of 19 to 436 m slm

history
In the Middle Ages, Canino belonged to the Farnese family . From 1534 to 1649 it belonged to the Duchy of Castro , which Pope Paul III. , bourgeois Alessandro Farnese, set up for his illegitimate son Pier Luigi II Farnese . After it was destroyed by Pope Urban VIII , it was incorporated into the Papal States.
In 1814 Pope Pius VII raised Lucien Bonaparte , the brother of Napoléon Bonaparte, to prince of Canino . Lucien Bonaparte had extensive excavations carried out in the area around Canino, including Vulci , in which mainly Etruscan finds were made.

politics
Mauro Pucci from the right-wing Rinnovamento Caninese citizens' list was elected mayor in May 2011. His list also has the majority in the local council with 8 out of 12 seats. He replaced Lina Novelli ( center-left alliance ) (2006-2011), who was no longer a candidate.
Partner communities
Canino is aiming for a community partnership with the community of Nufringen , Böblingen district, Baden-Württemberg. In autumn 2009 a delegation from Canino came to Nufringen, the return visit was in autumn 2010.
Attractions
- The old town, called Le Buche , still has a closed medieval townscape.
- The Palazzo Bonaparte was built by Giuseppe Valadier for Lucien Bonaparte.
- The parish church of Santi Apostoli Giovanni e Andrea was built from 1783 to 1793 on the site of a medieval church.
- Santa Croce Church is the oldest church in Canino.
- The former monastery of San Francesco was founded in the 15th century by Gabriele Francesco Farnese .
- On the road to Ischia di Castro are the ruins of the fortress Castellardo with the remains of cave dwellings. It was first mentioned in 1175 and destroyed by the Caninesi in 1459.
- Canino has shares in the archaeological park of the ancient city of Vulci , in particular the necropolis di Ponte Rotto with the tombs of the Tumulo della Cuccumella, Tomba delle Iscrizioni and the Tomba François .
Culinary specialties
Canino is famous for its olive oil , which has been awarded the DOP designation of origin . Canino is the center of green asparagus cultivation . Every year in April the Sagra dell'Asparago (Asparagus Festival) takes place here.
