geography

Capodimonte is 103 km northwest of Rome and 26 km northwest of Viterbo . The medieval town center is located at a height of 334 m on a headland 15 m above the water level of the former volcanic lake. The Isola Bisentina belongs to the municipality. Capodimonte, with its two-kilometer-long promenade along the black, volcanic sand beach, is a popular destination for Romans in summer.

traffic

Capodimonte is located between the SS 2 Via Cassia , which connects Rome with Florence , and the SS 312 Via Castrense, which leads to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea . The nearest train station is in Montefiascone.

history

The place offers finds from the Etruscan era , when there was an urban settlement on and around Monte Bisenzio. It was not until the early Middle Ages that Capodimonte was founded as Castrum Capitis Montis and equipped with a castle by the Signori di Bisenzio in 1254. At times it was under the rule of Orvieto . Members of the Farnese family are recorded as local lords around 1420. From Paul III. 1537 the Duchy of Castro slammed Capodimonte remained until its dissolution in 1649 under the Farnese rule, and then again directly into the Papal States to be integrated. With its end in September 1870, the Kingdom of Italy came into being.

politics

Mario Fanelli ( PD ) was elected mayor in June 2009. His center-left list also has a majority in the local council with 8 out of 12 seats. He replaced Giuseppe Micarelli (center-right list), who was no longer a candidate. On May 26, 2014 Fanelli began his second term.

Attractions

  • The octagonal fortress "Rocca Farnese" in the center of the village, probably designed around 1520 for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, later Pope Paul III, by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger , but it ultimately appears to be unfinished. Erected above the old castle from 1254 and separated from the rest of the town center by a moat, over which a stone bridge leads. Inner courtyard with high renaissance windows. The castle is surrounded by a walled wall with corner bastions.
  • Collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta on the Piazza della Rocca with a single-nave baroque interior, three-part high altar and painting of the Madonna delle Grazie by Sebastiano Conca .
  • Palazzo Borghese in the Piazza della Rocca, today the town hall.
  • Palazzo Poniatowski at the northern end of the same square.
  • Church of San Carlo on Via dell'Orologio with baroque interior, side altars in arched niches with donor coat of arms and main altar.
  • Church of San Rocco on Viale Regina Margherita with a classical facade.
  • Madonna del Soccorso cemetery church with a handsome baroque main altar.
  • Museo della Navigazione nelle Acque Interne on Viale Regina Margherita with a Bronze Age dugout from Isola Bisentina .
  • Isola Bisentina north of Capodimonte with Palazzo Farnese, high renaissance church Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger with later octagonal dome and simple interior with burial place of the early members of the Farnese family from 1449, which shows an old family coat of arms of Ranuccio V; seven chapels on prominent points on the island contain only fragmentary fresco paintings.
  • Monte Bisenzio north-west of Capodimonte, place of an Etruscan city with necropolis, Roman settlement and medieval seat of the Lords of Bisenzio, abandoned in 1816.
  • The Sunken Trinity, a group of figures (Mary and Joseph with Jesus in their arms), at the bottom of the lake, east of the city, can only be reached by boat
