Carbognano |
Carbognano is a municipality in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio with 1937 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 59 km northwest of Rome and 23 km southeast of Viterbo .
geography
Carbognano lies on the slope of the Monti Cimini east of Lake Vico . It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini .
history
The place was first owned by the Farfa monastery in the Sabina , because a fundus carbonianum in the Regestum Farfense from the year 817 is mentioned. In 1254 the castle belonged to the municipality of Viterbo ; in the late Middle Ages, the prefects of Vico and the Anguillara fought over possession. In 1443 the place appears as Carmignano in a document from Pope Eugen IV. In 1494 Alexander VI transferred it. it to Orsino Orsini, the son of his sister-in-law Adriana de Milà and the husband of his second mistress Giulia Farnese , who lived here until 1522: Orsino, lord of Vasanello , died on July 31, 1500. The daughter from this marriage, Laura Orsini, becomes speculative viewed as a child of Pope Alexander. On November 16, 1505, she married Nicolò Franciotti della Rovere, one of the nephews of Pope Julius II , and brought 30,000 ducats into the marriage as a dowry. At her death in 1531 she bequeathed her property to her son Giulio della Rovere, who died around 1550 as the last of his family line. From 1577, Carbognano belonged to the main line of the Colonna family in Palestrina as an inheritance from her daughter Elena Franciotti della Rovere , because Elena had married Stefano Colonna of Palestrina in her second marriage and brought the towns of Carbogano, Vasanello and Gallese into the marriage. On January 25, 1630, Francesco Colonna, second prince of Palestrina, sold this city to Pope Urban VIII in exchange for Carbognano while retaining the title of prince. Since then, the Princes of Carbognano and Dukes of Vasanello have resided in their family palace in the center of Carbognano for nine generations. As the last title holder, Urbano Colonna, ninth Prince of Carbognano and ninth Duke of Vasanello, died in his plane on October 11, 1942 during an Italian air raid on the island of Malta . With this the line of the Colonna of Carbognano became extinct.

Attractions
- Castello Orsini-Colonna: Compact castle in the center of the village with a high keep, external towers and residential buildings, the gates and windows of which show the Farnese coat of arms or inscriptions by Giulia Farnese. Inside there are some rooms with frescoed ceilings, which, in addition to hunting scenes, particularly depict the mythical animal of the unicorn, which was Giulia's emblem.
- Collegiata di San Pietro: Main church of the village with a large four-column portico that is directly connected to the castle by a connecting tract. It was built in the classicism style between 1773 and 1796 at the instigation and with money of Giulio Cesare II Colonna; A bust of St. Peter is inserted in a wreath with garlands in the gable. The single-nave interior with side chapels breathes the spirit of classicism and features paintings and frescoes with the legend of the local saint Euticius.
- Church of San Filippo Neri: Located on the western edge of the town center, it has a Rococo-like facade from 1636 and a high-baroque single-nave interior. The main altar painting with the Adoration of Our Lady by St. Filippo Neri is a copy of the picture by Guido Reni in the Chiesa Nuova in Rome.
- Church of Santa Maria della Immacolata Concezione: Exactly opposite the previous church on the eastern edge of the town, the building has a facade that ends at the top with a handsome portal, the architrave of which shows the building inscription by Giulia Farnese from 1522. The single-nave interior contains several frescoes from the school of the Zuccari brothers from around 1580, which were restored between 2010 and 2015. They show, among other things, a crucifixion and St. Michael slaying a dragon.
- Church of Sant'Anna: Erected around 1700 to the east below the town center, the building was restored in 2005. In the baroque interior, each with two side chapels, the main altar painting of the Holy Family and the pictures of the side altars are copies of stolen originals.
- Church of Sant'Eutizio: North of Carbognano, this country church has a striking apse and is the only church in town with a three-aisled interior. The frescoes depict the legend of St. Euticius with a grain miracle, which has entered the local coat of arms with the symbol of three ears of wheat.
- Church of San Donato: South of the historic town center, this former country church presents in its apse zone various frescoes with saints from different times, which were installed as a kind of Bible for the people . Only the scenes in the apse itself were created at the same time.
- Church of Santa Maria della Valle: Built at the cemetery a little southeast of Carbognano, behind a wooden choir screen it has frescoes by the Viterbes early Renaissance painter Antonio Massaro, known as Pastura. The painting integrated into the main altar depicts the Madonna and Child in a halo.
- Town hall: The three-part building is built right next to the castle on the Piazza del Commune and is defined by its central clock and bell tower, which can be reached via a spiral staircase. On the back is an alliance coat of arms of the third Prince Egidio Colonna, the heraldic left half of which shows the coat of arms of the Altieri family, from which his two wives came.
- Fountain: On the ramp leading to the main entrance of the castle and town hall, there is a fountain with facing masonry and four Tuscan pilaster strips, crowned by the local coat of arms with the three ears of corn under a prince's crown. The central gargoyle is a lion mask.
