Proceno [ proʧeˈno ] is a municipality in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio with 539 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The municipality is located about 115 km northwest of the regional capital Rome and about 45 km northwest of the provincial capital Viterbo . It lies in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone E, 2 295 GG. Proceno is located in the Monti Volsini between Lake Bolsena and the border with Tuscany . The Stridolone and Paglia rivers flow through the municipality . Until 1986, the local churches belonged to the Acquapendente diocese, which was then incorporated into the Viterbo diocese .
Its districts include Centeno (288 m) and Le Piane .
The neighboring municipalities are Acquapendente , Castell'Azzara ( GR ), Piancastagnaio ( SI ), San Casciano dei Bagni (SI) and Sorano (GR).
history
Finds bear witness to the settlement of the place in the Etruscan era , local legend ascribes the founding of the place to Lars Porsenna . It then reappears shortly before the year 1000, when Pope Gregory V fortified the place and the castle (Rocca, today Castello) was probably built. In 1083 the place was destroyed by the troops around Henry IV and rebuilt fourteen years later by the Bovacciani from Chiusi . At the beginning of the 12th century the place belonged to Bernardino and Ildebrandino de Calmanaire, who in 1158 and 1159 transferred the rule to Pope Hadrian IV . During the years of the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelphs, the place Guglielmo del Nero from Acquapendente (Guelfe) was subject until Ghibelline troops took Proceno. From 1210 the Guelph Otto IV. , From 1221 then again the papal side under Honorius III. In 1251 the place Orvieto submitted , and at the time of the Western Schism the place belonged to Siena . Francesco I. Sforza took over the place in 1433, but then went to the Marche , so that after several years of siege, the place was taken by the Holy See in 1444 . In the 16th century, the place came to Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora , then the Mozzanti and Selvi ruled and again the Holy See until the unity of Italy.

- Castello di Proceno , castle in the town center; has belonged to the Cecchini family since the 18th century.
- Palazzo Sforza , a palace in the center of the village, built in the mid-16th century on the initiative of Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora. It has been owned by the municipality of Proceno since 1985 and contains the Museo della civiltà Contadina museum .
- San Salvatore , the main church in the town center, which was built during the Gothic period and later modified, keeping the Gothic portal and the interior. Contains frescoes from the 14th century ( Scene della vita di Sant'Antonio ), the canvas painting Martirio di San Sebastiano from the 17th century and the wooden statue of San Rocco (16th century).
- Sant'Agnese , round chapel at the highest point of the town center, dedicated to Agnes de Montepulciano . The present chapel was built in 1879 on the site of the convent where Saint Agnes worked for twenty-two years.
- San Martino (also called Chiesa dei Frati ), church just outside the town center, which was built around 1200; contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries ( Madonna in trono col bambio ei Santissimi Giovanni Battista e Maria Maddalena ).
- Madonna del Giglio , church just outside the town center; was created in the 14./15. Century and contains frescoes from the environment of Taddeo Zuccari .
- Madonna delle Piane , church in the district of Le Piane.

politics
Francesco Battistoni was elected mayor in June 2004. On May 15, 2011, Dino Cesarini (Lista Civica) was elected as the new mayor.

The place is about 2.5 km west of the Via Cassia , which here is the same as the Via Francigena .
