Culture and sights
Museums
Palazzo and Galleria Altieri
The Palazzo Altieri (formerly Santacroce ) was built between 1578 and 1585. It houses the Galleria Altieri, one of the most important collections of papal paintings, arranged chronologically and including Benedict XVI. also completely. There are also several rooms with wall frescoes and paintings that not only depict members of the Altieri family, but also show vedute of their possessions. In the chapel, a stained glass window commemorates the marriage of Paolo Altieri with Mathilde Fürstin von Urach and Countess von Württemberg from a sideline of the former royal house in 1874.
Parks
Le Olmate
As Le Olmate is a park-like part of the place designated in the southwest, which essentially consists of two intersecting, unpaved alleys, some of which are closed to motor traffic. The name Olmate comes from the trees there, the elms (ital. Olmi). Due to the relatively quiet and beautiful location, walkers and cyclists can often be found here.
Parco della Mola
The Parco della Mola is located about 4.5 kilometers outside the town center in a westerly direction. It is freely accessible, but there are some special regulations, especially with regard to leisure activities such as barbecues etc. You can get there by car via the only unpaved road that goes there, which is especially difficult to drive after rain showers. This ends at a parking lot on the edge of the park area, which can accommodate around 20 to 30 cars. From the parking lot it is only about 100 meters to walk to a natural sulfur water source. The water flows from here through two adjoining stone bathing pools and is then fed into the Mignone River. Only a few meters from here are the ruins of the old mill (ital. Mulino), which gave the park its name. There is also a very small lake into which a waterfall several meters high flows.
Sports
Oriolo Romano has a lively sports club. The sports offered include soccer, volleyball, boccia, climbing, tennis, table tennis and rugby. A collection of sports facilities (soccer fields, tennis field, table tennis tables, gym with climbing wall, bocce lanes, roller skating area) is located in the southwestern Olmate near the Scuola Media (middle school).
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Road traffic
Oriolo is on Via Braccianese Claudia, state road 493, which corresponds to the ancient Via Clodia . It is run within the village to the north as "Via della Stazione" and to the south as "Via Claudia", the course of which completely crosses the village, including the center. Since this is one of the most important connecting roads between Rome and Viterbo along with the Via Cassia and also supplies a large number of places in the area, the volume of traffic is correspondingly high. All other roads in Oriolo are far less busy and are not suitable for through traffic. In the outskirts of the municipality there is usually no asphalting, but these slopes are generally very accessible with all vehicles.
Train traffic
Oriolo Romano has its own train station, which is listed in the official Trenitalia publications under the name "Oriolo" (without "Romano"!). The station is served exclusively by the FR3 Roma-Capranica-Viterbo line, which runs from Roma Ostiense to Viterbo Porta Fiorentina. During the day there is an hourly train in both directions. The journey time to Roma San Pietro is around 1 hour and 10 minutes and to Viterbo PF around 40 minutes.
Ship and air traffic
The nearest large sea port with international shipping traffic is Civitavecchia and is about 45 kilometers away. The closest airports are the Roman airports of Fiumicino - Leonardo da Vinci (56 km) and Ciampino (66 km).
education
Oriolo has both a primary school (scuola elementare) and a middle school (scuola media).
