geography

The place is on the slope of the Monti Cimini, which represent the rest of the caldera , the crater rim of the extinct volcano Cimino. The crater lake, the Vico lake with its bathing beaches, is a popular local recreation area. It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini .

history

The Etruscan city of Surrina Vetus, which was destroyed by the Romans, once stood in the place of today's location. From around 1000 AD the place belonged to a Benedictine abbey . From the 11th century onwards, the noble, Roman families of the Guastapane, Pandolfi, Orsini , Colonna and finally, from the 18th century onwards, the Albani took over the rule of Soriano. In 1848 the castle and town fell to the Holy See .

From 1278 Giovanni Gaetano Orsini, later Pope Nicholas III. , the castle, instead of the Benedictine abbey, was built on the top of the hill around which the medieval village center developed.

During World War II, Soriano was bombed by the Americans.

The Castello Orsini (13th century) was founded by Pope Nicholas III. (born as Giovanni Gaetano Orsini).

The Palazzo Chigi-Albani was built from 1561 by Ottaviano Schiratti for Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo in the Renaissance style.

The Fontana Papacqua , designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola in 1562 , is located on a terrace of the Palazzo Chigi-Albani. The fountain system consists of allegories of the four seasons. Especially interesting are the figures with erotic symbolism, such as billy goats and satyrs , to which the cardinal, according to his own statement, placed particular emphasis.

The Romanesque church of San Giorgio dates from the 11th century.

The classical cathedral of San Nicola di Bari was built in 1794 by Giulio Camporese.

Near Soriano on Monte Cimino there is an extraordinary boulder in the chestnut forest, which Pliny already described because it can be moved despite its immense weight.
