Onano is a municipality in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio with 977 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

The municipality is located about 100 kilometers northwest of the regional and state capital Rome and about 35 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Viterbo . Onano is located in the Monti Volsini between Lake Bolsena and the border with Tuscany . The place is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, 2,325 GG.

The neighboring municipalities are Acquapendente , Gradoli , Grotte di Castro , Latera and Sorano ( GR ).

history

Like several other communities in the area, Onano belonged to the Monaldeschi della Cervara family from Orvieto in the late Middle Ages . From these it passed in the early 15th century to the Sforza , Counts of Santa Fiora , of whom Mario II became the first Duke of Onano in 1612 . This title ended with the death of Federico Sforza, the fourth Duke. Later, Onano found the hometown of the Pacelli family, Pope Pius XII. (1939–1958) came from, Attention: His grandfather Marcantonio was a Vatican diplomat under Pope Pius IX. (1846–1878), his father Filippo dean of the auditors of the papal Sacra Rota , and his older brother Francesco negotiated the Lateran Treaties with Italy in 1929 , which returned state sovereignty to the Vatican ; therefore he became papal and Italian Marchese in 1929/1931 , his three sons Carlo, Marcantonio and Giulio received the title of Italian prince during their uncle's pontificate in 1942 .

  • Castello Monaldeschi , also called Palazzo Madama , with four corner towers as the seat of the former local lords. Originated in the first half of the 15th century by the Monaldeschi della Cervara.
  • Santa Croce , church in Piazza Pio XII. The building dates from the 13th century and was badly damaged in an air raid in June 1944. In 1956 the church was rebuilt. The campanile was preserved in its original form.
  • Santa Maria dell'Immacolata Concezione , also called Chiesa dei Frati , church in Via Cavour, built in 1784.
  • Madonna del Carmine , also called Madonna del Bargello church. The first church was built in 1668 and was replaced by the current structure a few meters away in 1964.
  • Madonna delle Grazie , Romanesque church. Contains the painting Vergine col Bambino attributed to Sano di Pietro .
  • Madonna del Piano , church built in 1493. Contains a Madonna fresco by Antonio del Massaro (called Il Pastura , approx. 1450–1516).
  • Madonna del Soccorso , also called Madonna della Fontana church, built in 1454.
  • Santissima Trinità , also called Chiesa dell'Acqua Santa , which was built in 1668.

Giuseppe Onori was elected mayor in June 2004. On May 25, 2014 Giovanni Giuliani (Lista Civica) was elected as the new mayor.

Culinary specialties

Onano is famous for its variety of lentils, which is only grown in the Onano area and which used to be supplied to the Pope's court . The Lenticchie di Onano were added to the Ark of Taste by Slow Food . The Sagra delle Lenticchie , the Lentil Festival, takes place in August .
