Attractions

  • Palazzo Farnese, built on the site of a previous castle from 1515 to 1534 by Antonio da Sangallo , the court architect of the Farnese on behalf of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, since 1534 Pope Paul III. After 1649 it was used as a monastery, became state property in 1874, only to come into private hands in 1878; Pope Benedict XV donated the palace he bought back in 1922 to the municipality of Gradoli. In 1997, a major renovation was largely completed. Outside, determined by large bastion walls at three corners in the form of tower extensions, the building rises with its main facade of seven axes and the basement and three high upper floors; the rear facade is designed similarly. Inside there are three staircases that lead to the representative floors: In the first, the Sala Ducale is furnished with mannerist wall frescoes in grotesque style and a fireplace. On the second floor, further representative rooms are decorated with frescoes of mythological content; they house the Museo del Costume Farnesiano, which exhibits replicas of 16th century costumes.
  • Collegiate church S. Maria Maddalena to the left of Palazzo Farnese as a new building with a baroque facade after the fire of the medieval predecessor church, consecrated on April 25, 1705 by Cardinal Marcantonio Barbarigo. In the first chapel on the left the Renaissance baptismal font by Isaia da Pisa , in the church museum a cycle of frescoes with scenes of the Passion of Christ.
