Gil Álvarez Carillo de Albornoz CRSA ( Italian Egidio Albornoz ; * around 1310 in Cuenca , Spain; † August 24, 1367 near Viterbo , Italy) was Archbishop of Toledo (1338-1350) and cardinal at the Papal Palace in Avignon .

biography

The noble family Albornoz entered the service of King Alfonso XI. of Castile (r. 1312-1350), fought with distinction against the Moors , saved the king's life in the battle of the Salado near Tarifa (1340), but fell out of favor with his successor, Peter the Cruel (r. 1350-1369) and fled to Pope Clement VI. to Avignon , who elevated him to cardinal and assigned him the titular church of San Clemente . After the by Cola di Rienzo in the Papal States aroused unrest ordered him Innocent VI. 1353 to his legate and vicar general in Italy and in the Papal States with extensive powers.
