The Montefeltro is a historical landscape in the Tosko-Emilian Apennines . Today it belongs to the regions of Emilia-Romagna , Tuscany and Marche . It borders on the Republic of San Marino . The name comes from mons feretri (us) , the ancient name of the mountain on which the city and fortress of San Leo are located.

The Montefeltro corresponds to the territory of the old diocese of Montefeltro, to which San Marino also belongs. The bishopric was initially San Leo, since 1572 it has been Pennabilli .

The main towns of Montefeltro are San Leo and Pennabilli and the administrative offices of Carpegna and Novafeltria. The highest mountain is Monte Carpegna (1415 meters).

In the Middle Ages, the local rulers, the Counts of Carpegna, split into different families: the House of Carpegna, the House of Malatesta (with ancestral seat Pennabili, later Lords of Rimini) and the House of Montefeltro (later Counts and Dukes of Urbino).

Since then, the places of Montefeltro have mainly belonged to changing rulers, including the Principality of Carpegna, the dominion of the Malatesta , the Duchy of Urbino and other smaller territorial lords , until the brands were reintegrated into the Papal States. Numerous castles, forts and city fortifications bear witness to the territorial conflicts of this time.
