Isaia da Pisa

Isaia da Pisa , actually Isaia Ganti (* around 1410 in Pisa ?; † around 1464) was an Italian sculptor of the Quattrocento . He worked mainly in Rome and Naples.

Life

Isaia da Pisa, grandson of the stonemason Giovanni di Gante and son of Pippa di Giovanni de Ghante da Pisa, who worked with Donatello at the Baptistery in Florence in 1426 , is known for his relief work in Rome. The exact date of birth is not known. Isaia is believed to have come to Rome before 1431 with his father, who worked in the Lateran Palace . There is no biographical information about Isaia da Pisa before the mid-1440s. 1449 an order for a tomb of the Farnese in the church Ss. Giacomo e Cristoforo mentioned on Isola Bisentina in Lake Bolsena. Around the same time, the grave monument for the Portuguese Cardinal Antonio Martinez de Chávez († 1447) was built in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano based on a design by Filarete . Around 1450 Isaia da Pisa was appointed esperto magistro to Orvieto to work on the facade of the cathedral . After his return to Rome he worked, together with Paolo Romano , eius sotio (his partner), on several projects on behalf of Pope Pius II in the Vatican palaces . His last small commission is attested for the year 1464; he must have died soon after. Isaia da Pisa left a son, Giovanni Cristoforo Romano (1456-1512), who was believed to be a student of Andrea Bregno .
