Monte Romano is a municipality with 1940 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio .

geography

Monte Romano is located 82 km northwest of Rome , 29 km southwest of Viterbo and 21 km east of the Tyrrhenian coast near Lido di Tarquinia . The municipality is located in the Maremma Laziale, the undulating, sparsely populated landscape between Lake Bolsena and the coast. The municipality extends over a height of 27 to 370 m slm. At Monte Romano there is a military training area .

The neighboring communities are Blera , Tarquinia , Tolfa ( RM ), Tuscania , Vetralla , Viterbo .

The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).

Monte Romano is on the strada stadale SS 1 bis , which connects the Via Aurelia with the Via Cassia . The nearest train station is in Tarquinia on the Rome-Pisa railway line.

Maurizio Testa (list of citizens) was elected mayor in June 2009. He won the election against his predecessor Domenico Pengo (2004-2009).

Attractions

The Castello Roccarespampani was built in 1607 by Ottavio Tassoni d'Este. Nearby are the ruins of the previous castle , now called Rocca Vecchia , and the Ponte di Frà Cirillo over the Traponzo river.
