Tolfa is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 4923 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The place is 50 kilometers northwest of Rome and 13 kilometers from the port city of Civitavecchia .

geography

Tolfa is located in the nature reserve of the Monti della Tolfa . The Tolfa Mountains have been used to mine minerals such as iron ore and alum since the Etruscan era . Today, however, they are one of the most lonely areas of Lazio, so that here, along with many other animals, the Tolfa wolves also have a retreat. Tolfa is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti della Tolfa .

The municipality includes the suburbs Rota, a village on the river Mignone, and the northeastern part of Santa Severa on the Rome – Civitavecchia railway line.

The neighboring towns are Allumiere , Blera ( VT ), Bracciano , Canale Monterano , Cerveteri , Manziana , Monte Romano (VT), Santa Marinella , Tarquinia (VT) and Vejano (VT)

history

The Tolfa Mountains have been densely populated since the Bronze Age because of their rich mineral resources. Numerous archaeological finds testify to this. Tolfa itself was first mentioned in a document in 1201. In the 13th century the place came into the possession of the Papal States . Initially ruled by the Frangipane family, Tolfa was directly subordinate to the Apostolic Chamber from the 15th century .
