Palombara Sabina is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 13,056 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Palombara is 36 km northeast of Rome and 17 km north of Tivoli . The place is at the foot of Monte Gennaro on the western edge of the Monti Lucretili. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Sabini e Tiburtini . The Natural Park of the Monti Lucretili is based in Palombara.
The old town of Palombara is located on a round hill and is grouped around the large medieval castle of the Savelli. The municipality also includes the villages of Cretone and Stazzano.
The municipality extends over a height of 25 to 1,271 m slm
The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (medium risk).
The neighboring towns are Guidonia Montecelio , Mentana , Monteflavio , Montelibretti , Monterotondo , Moricone , San Polo dei Cavalieri and Sant'Angelo Romano .
traffic
The state road 636 connects Palombara with Tivoli and the A24 motorway , exit Tivoli. The Via Palombarese, on the other hand, has led directly to Rome since ancient times. The Palombara-Marcellina train station (10 km from the town center) is on the Rome – Avezzano railway line.
history
A Castrum Palombarum was first mentioned in 1029 . In 1276 the rule fell to the Savelli family . In 1556 the place was sacked by the troops of the Duke of Alba and the castle was partially burned down.

politics
Paolo Della Rocca was elected mayor in April 2005 and was confirmed in office in 2010. With 13 councilors, his list of citizens has a majority compared to 7 councilors of the center-left alliance .

On a blue sign three yellow mountains on top of which a white dove with an olive branch in its beak sits. It is a talking coat of arms because the name Palombara is derived from the Latin Palumba for a dove.
Attractions
- The oldest part of the Castello Savelli is the 9th century tower. In the Castello you can still see frescoes from the 16th century from the school of Raphael . Today a natural history museum is housed in the castle.
- To the northeast of the town center is the impressive ruin of Castello Castiglione, which was first mentioned in 1276.
- The Basilica of San Giovanni in Argentella belongs to a now abandoned Benedictine abbey. It still essentially retains its Romanesque structure (10th - 11th centuries).
Culinary specialties
Palombara is known for its cherries. The Sagra delle Cerase , the cherry festival , takes place at the beginning of June every year .
