Torrita Tiberina is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region with 1070 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 54 kilometers north of Rome .

geography

Torrita Tiberina lies on a ridge in a loop of the Tiber and borders the provinces of Rieti and L'Aquila . It is located between Monte Soratte and the Sabine Mountains .

history

The name Turritula was mentioned for the first time in 747 in a deed of donation from the Carolingian Karlmann to the monastery of Sant'Andrea in Flumine near Ponzano . In the Middle Ages, rule over the place was divided between the Benedictines of the Abbey of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome and the Savelli family . From the 15th century the settlement belonged to the Orsini family , who ceded it to Tommaso Melchiorri for 30,000 Scudi in 1586 , whose descendants they sold to Princess Christina of Saxony (1775–1837), wife of Prince Camillo Massimo (1770–1840) . After the Italian unification, the place name was expanded to Torrita Tiberina in 1872. The Italian politician and two-time Prime Minister Aldo Moro , who was murdered on May 9, 1978 by the terrorist organization Red Brigades , is buried in the cemetery .
