history

Anticoli Corrado

Anticoli Corrado emerged in the uncertain time after the fall of the Roman Empire , when the population abandoned the plains and established fortified places on hills that were easier to defend. Anticoli was first mentioned in the 7th century, when Pope Adeodatus II donated an estate called Antikuis to the Erasmus monastery in Rome.

In the 13th century Anticoli belonged to Friedrich von Antioch , an illegitimate son of Friedrich II. His son Konrad von Antioch hosted his cousin Konradin von Hohenstaufen at his castle in Anticoli and accompanied him to the battle of Tagliacozzo . However, Konrad was able to evade capture by Charles of Anjou , as his wife Beatrice Lancia exchanged hostages for him , which she held captive at the castle of Saracinesco . When Konrad returned, Anticoli was given the addition of Corrado (Italian for Konrad).

In 1430 Anticoli came to the Colonna . Later to the Barberini and the Massimo .

Artist village

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Anticoli was the target of numerous painters. Ernst Stückelberg was the first painter to settle in the mountain village in 1858. Other artists such as Oskar Kokoschka , Felice Carena , Paolo Salvati , Herbert Molwitz , Gisela Baur-Nütten , Karli Sohn-Rethel , Maurice Sterne , Wilhelm Wessel , Paul Mersmann and Luigi Pirandello were also inspired by the spectacular landscape. Heinrich Dreber , whose views of Anticoli are hanging in the Kunsthalle Bremen , died in Anticoli in 1875. The painter and sculptor Margherita Osswald was born in Anticoli.

Even today, the place with numerous studios is considered an artists' village.

In 1969 Anticoli Corrado was the location for the exterior shots of the feature film The Secret of Santa Vittoria (directed by Stanley Kramer ), in which Anthony Quinn , Anna Magnani and Hardy Krüger play the leading roles.
