The Barberini were an old Italian noble family .

history

The family originally came from Tuscany and settled in Florence in the 11th century . She dropped her original name Tafani and took that of her Tuscan ancestral seat Barberino Val d'Elsa . Until the 17th century she achieved great wealth and influence, so that she even managed to provide a pope with Urban VIII .

Urban VIII., Bourgeois Maffeo Barberini, occupied high posts with his relatives. The sons of his brother came to special reputation: Francesco Barberini he made to Kardinalnepoten , Antonio Barberini to Cardinal and Duke of Urbino . Francesco and his brother Taddeo Barberini , the prince of Palestrina , had the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, one of the first baroque palaces in Europe, built by the most important architects of the era for many later as a “prototype”. Carlo Maderno was initially commissioned to do this, after his death in 1629 Gian Lorenzo Bernini took over the construction management. Francesco Borromini was also involved in the work . a. designed the spiral staircase in the south wing.

Urban VIII released the Colosseum as a quarry for his public construction work in Rome ; He had the bronze ceiling of the portico in the Pantheon melted down in order to have cannons made for the Castel Sant'Angelo . The Latin saying of the Pasquino Quod non fecerunt barbari, fecerunt Barberini (“What the barbarians couldn't do, the Barberini did”) reminds of these destructive practices on ancient monuments .

After the death of Urban VIII, Innocent X came to the papal throne, who succeeded in breaking the power of the Barberini. In 1722 the male line died out. Giulio Cesare Colonna di Sciarra , a son of the daughter of the last Barberini, took over the coat of arms and the name and thus founded the family branch of the Barberini-Colonna. This branch also expired in 1893 in the male line and the name passed on to a son-in-law, the Marchese Luigi Sacchetti, who was then also made Prince of Palestrina. After the Second World War, the Italian state bought Palazzo Barberini and equipped it as a museum with a famous collection of paintings.

coat of arms

The Barberini coat of arms shows three bees . These can often be found in the cityscape of Rome due to the building activity of Urban VIII.

“The Barberini were originally called Tafani and came from Barberino in Tuscany. In her arms she had Tafani so horseflies , and those are not particularly noble flies. When they came to Rome and Maffeo Barberini became Pope as Urban VIII, the family was ennobled and they refined the brakes in their coat of arms into bees. "
