Francesco Barberini , called the Younger , (born November 12, 1662 in Rome , † August 17, 1738 ibid) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

Francesco Barberini was born to Maffeo Barberini (1631–1686) and his wife Olimpia Giustiniani Barberini (1641–1729). A church career was determined for him from an early age. So he bought during the pontificate of Innocent XI. In keeping with the customs of the time , he held an office in the Apostolic Chamber and became an auditor of this very chamber.

Pope Alexander VIII created Francesco Barberini in the consistory of November 13, 1690 as cardinal deacon under dispensation from the requirement of receiving minor orders and from the hindrance that his uncle and cousin already belonged to the college of cardinals . The Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat and the title deaconry Sant'Angelo in Pescheria on November 27th of the same year. He took part in the 1691 conclave , which Pope Innocent XII. chose. He sent him on January 4, 1694 as a legate to the Romandiola . Barberini received the minor ordinations on February 14, 1694, the ordination as subdeacon followed on November 22, 1699 and the deacon ordination on September 26, 1700. He was a participant in the 1700 conclave , from which Clement XI. emerged as Pope. From 1704 he was Commendatarabbot of the monasteries Farfa and Subiaco . On May 6, 1715 he became a cardinal priest and was assigned the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme . He was ordained a priest on September 15, 1715. On May 11, 1718 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede .

Francesco Barberini was raised to cardinal bishop on March 3, 1721 and received the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . He was ordained bishop on March 16 of the same year in the Church of the Discalced Carmelites in Rome by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci , Cardinal Bishop of Albano and Cardinal Secretary of State ; Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop Vincenzo Petra and Bernardo Maria Conti OSB , resigned Bishop of Terracina . Cardinal Barberini took part in the 1721 conclave , which resulted in the election of Pope Innocent XIII. flowed. He was also among the papal voters when the conclave of 1721 Benedict XIII. brought Petri to the chair. On June 22, 1726 Barberini was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars . On July 1, 1726, he moved to the suburbicarian diocese Ostia e Velletri and became dean of the college of cardinals . As such, he headed the conclave in 1730 with the election of Clement XII.

Francesco Barberini died on August 17, 1738 at around 9 a.m. in his Roman palace. His body was transferred to the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle , where the exequies took place, and temporarily buried there. Shortly afterwards his bones were transferred to Palestrina and buried in the local church of Santa Rosalia in the tomb of his ancestors.

Family relationships

Francesco Barberini came from the influential noble family of the Barberini . His great-great-uncle was Pope Urban VIII , another great-great-uncle was Cardinal Antonio Barberini OFMCap (the elder). He was also a great-nephew of Cardinals Francesco Barberini (the Elder) and of Antonio Barberini O.S.Io.Hieros. (the younger one). He was also a nephew of Carlo Barberini and a cousin of the Duke of Modena Rinaldo d'Este .

When the extravagance of his childless brother Urbano Barberini (1664-1722) threatened to plunge the family into financial and dynastic ruin, a violent dispute broke out between the brothers, which only began after the birth of Urbano's heir, Cornelia Costanza (1716-1787) ), who later married Giulio Cesare Colonna di Sciarra (1708–1787), ended with Urbano's death in 1722.
