Fabrizio Paolucci (born April 2, 1651 in Forlì , † June 12, 1726 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, papal diplomat and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Paolucci went to Rome at the age of eight and was raised there by his great-uncle, Cardinal Francesco Paolucci . He studied at the University of La Sapienza and obtained there on February 23, 1674 the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque .

On April 9, 1685, he became Bishop of Macerata-Tolentino , and on May 6, 1685, Cardinal Vicar Gasparo Carpegna donated his episcopal ordination . On January 27, 1698, he moved to the bishopric in Ferrara with the personal title of archbishop . He was also apostolic nuncio in Cologne . On December 19, 1698 he was by Pope Innocent XII. elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Giovanni e Paolo . Under Pope Clement XI. , in whose election he had participated in the 1700 conclave , Paolucci held the post of cardinal state secretary or state secretary of his Holiness from 1700 to 1721 . On February 8, 1719 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano .

As Clemens XI. died in 1721, Paolucci was considered the most promising candidate for the successor in the following conclave . But because he sympathized with the political positions of France, Emperor Charles VI voted . against him. So Paolucci spent the years under Pope Innocent XIII, who was elected in his place . as a cardinal. After his death in 1724 Paolucci was again traded as a candidate for the successor. Again, however, there was an objection and it was not elected in the 1724 conclave . Under Benedict XIII. he held the post of Cardinal Secretary of State from 1724 until his death. On June 12, 1724 he became Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina and finally moved on November 19, 1725 to the suburbicarian bishopric of Ostia e Velletri .

Fabrizio Paolucci died in the Apostolic Palace on the Quirinal and was buried in the Church of San Marcello in Rome.

His nephew Camillo Paolucci , whom he promoted, was later also accepted into the college of cardinals .
