Francesco Pignatelli CRTheat (born February 6, 1652 in Senise , † December 5, 1734 in Naples ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

The son of a Neapolitan nobleman and nephew of Pope Innocent XII. joined the order of the Theatines in 1665 and was a doctor of theology. He made his profession on February 18, 1669 in Naples .

He taught philosophy and theology as a lecturer in the religious houses of Rome and Madrid before King Charles II of Spain made him Archbishop of Taranto. Pope Innocent XI. appointed him on 27 September 1683 actually archbishop of Taranto, he that on 3 October 1683 by Cardinal Carlo Pio di Savoia in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome together with Giacomo Cantelmo the episcopal ordination received; Co-consecrators were Giuseppe Bologna and Gregorio Giuseppe Gaetani .

Papal assistant to the throne since April 16, 1700 , he was appointed Archbishop of Naples on February 19, 1703 . Raised cardinal on December 17, 1703, the Pope sent him the red biretta to Naples and on February 11, 1704 appointed him cardinal priest of Santi Marcellino e Pietro . In 1719 he became Cardinal Bishop of Sabina , 1724 of Frascati , 1725 of Porto and Santa Rufina , with which he also advanced to Cardinal Subdean. In June 1726 he renounced the assumption of the cardinal diocese of Ostia and Velletri, which would have been his seniority in order to remain Archbishop of Naples.
