Giuseppe Spinelli (born February 1, 1694 in Naples , † April 12, 1763 in Ostia ) was an Italian cardinal and prefect of the congregation De propaganda fide .

Life

He was the fourth of five children of Giambattista Spinelli, Marquis of Fuscaldo, Prince of Sant'Arcangelo and Duke of Caivano, and his wife Maria Imperiali from the family of the Princes of Francavilla. His great-uncle was Cardinal Lorenzo Imperiali , his uncle was Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali . He was also a cousin of Cardinal Cosimo Imperiali and uncle of the later Cardinal Ferdinando Spinelli , another cardinal from the Spinellis family was Filippo Spinelli .

At the age of thirteen he began his studies at the Seminario Romano in 1707 and lived at the court of his uncle Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali, later he attended the University of La Sapienza in Rome, where he received his doctorate iuris utriusque on September 11, 1717 . Afterwards he was chamberlain under Pope Clement XI. In 1719 he brought the red biretta to the newly appointed Cardinal Giorgio Spinola to Vienna, where this nuncio was at the imperial court. Spinelli belonged to the so-called Zelanti faction in the Cardinal's College , the traditionalists loyal to the Pope. In June 1761 he became dean of the Holy College .
