Raniero D'Elci (born March 7, 1670 in Florence , † June 22, 1761 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, Archbishop of Ferrara and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He received on 21 December 1699, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In the following year he entered the papal service and held several offices both in the Roman Curia and in the papal administration . From 1711 to 1716 he was the Inquisitor of Malta .

He was appointed titular archbishop of Rhodus on November 22, 1730 . The episcopal ordination donated to him on January 7, 1731 in the Jesuit church of Avignon François Gontieri , the Archbishop of Avignon , co- consecrators were François Abbati , Bishop of Carpentras , and Joseph Louis Cahorne de La Palun , Bishop of Vaison . He served as Apostolic Nuncio in France from 1731 to 1738 .

Pope Clement XII. created him on December 20, 1737 in pectore as cardinal, which was announced in the consistory of June 23, 1738, whereupon D'Elci was installed as cardinal priest of Santa Sabina in July of the same year . In May of the same year he was appointed Archbishop of Ferrara and received the pallium on July 22, 1738. He held the archbishopric of Ferrara until 1740, when he became a legate in this city. He was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina on April 10, 1747 and Cardinal Bishop of Santa Rufina on April 9, 1753 . After the death of Pietro Luigi Carafa on December 15, 1755, he was dean of the Holy College of Cardinals and as such since January 12, 1756 Cardinal Bishop of Ostia . As Dean of the College of Cardinals , he headed the conclave of 1758 . Regardless of his advanced age, he received several votes in the election.

He died in Rome in 1761 and was buried in his titular church, Santa Sabina .
