His family's history was closely tied to the Gonzaga house they had served in Mantua. In 1518, the ancestor Valente Valenti received the privilege of using the family name of the dynasty ruling in Mantua by a decree of Margrave Gianfrancesco II Gonzaga . This later led to the assumption that House Valenti was closely related to House Gonzaga. In fact, Isabella, the mother of Silvio's grandfather Odoardo Valenti Gonzaga (1620–1677), was born Gonzaga. She was married to Silvio's great-grandfather Ottavio Valenti Gonzaga (1579-1630).

Silvio was born as the second of the four children of Marchese Carlo Valenti and Barbara Andreasi. His sister was Donna Osanna, wife of Count Pompei at Pontara. His brother was Marchese Odoardo Valenti Gonzaga, imperial chief finance director and treasurer of Mantua. His son was Luigi Valenti Gonzaga (1725-1808), who, brought by his uncle Silvio to the Roman Curia and promoted there within the framework of the usual nepotism , was also cardinal in 1776.

Valenti Gonzaga attended in his youth the Collegio de 'Nobili in Parma and the University of Ferrara , where he obtained a doctorate in law in 1710 . After his studies, he worked as a papal honorary chaplain and in other functions for the Holy See and was ordained a priest on June 3, 1731 . Pope Clement XII appointed him as early as the next month . titular Archbishop of Nicaea . He was ordained bishop on July 22, 1731 in Rome by Cardinal Álvaro Cienfuegos SJ ; Co- consecrators were Giuseppe Spinelli , Nuncio in Flanders, and Archbishop Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini . From 1736 to 1738 Valenti Gonzaga was Apostolic Nuncio in Spain . In 1738 he was promoted to cardinal. As such, he acted from 1740 to 1747 and from 1747 to 1753 as cardinal priest of the titular churches of Santa Prisca and San Callisto and as Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals (1749–1750). He took part in the 1740 conclave in which Benedict XIV was elected Pope. The new Pope immediately appointed Valenti Gonzaga Cardinal Secretary of State , making him the most important Minister of State in the papal court. From 1753 until his death, Valenti Gonzaga held the office of Cardinal Bishop of Sabina .

Valenti Gonzaga owned an extensive collection of paintings that were sold in Amsterdam after his death in 1763.
