Bonaventura Duda (* as Roko Duda on January 14, 1924 in Rijeka , Croatia ; † August 3, 2017 in Varaždin , Croatia) was a Croatian Franciscan priest , theologian and university professor .

Life

Duda spent his early childhood in the village of Kras on the island of Krk , where he also attended elementary school. After graduating from the community school in Sušak , he first attended the school of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross , which in 1935 sent him to a Franciscan-run grammar school in Varaždin. Duda joined the order of the Franciscans on August 14, 1941 , received the religious name Bonaventura and completed his novitiate in Kloštar Ivanić . He was a member of the Croatian Franciscan Province of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Zagreb . From 1944 Duda studied theology and philosophy at the Catholic Theological Faculty at the University of Zagreb . On January 15, 1950, he was ordained a priest through Franjo Salis-Seewis, auxiliary bishop in Zagreb . After his licentiate in theology in 1952, he completed a doctorate at the Antonianum in Rome from 1954 to 1955 . From 1955 to 1957 he also studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute .

He taught theology at the University of Zagreb. From 1964 to 1969 he was professor and head of the New Testament Scriptures Department . Several times he was vice dean and from 1982 to 1986 dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty. At the same time he taught for more than 17 years at philosophical and theological institutions in the Croatian Franciscan Province in Samobor and Trsat .

He became known as a Bible researcher and biblical translator, as well as translating the documents of the Second Vatican Council into the Croatian language. He has worked for several newspapers and journals as well as for publishers. He has received scientific prizes and awards and in 2010 became a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Social Sciences. Since 1946 he has published a variety of scientific, technical and cultural articles and more than 40 books. He is considered to be one of the most respected Franciscans in the Croatian-speaking area.

Duda died on August 3, 2017 in Varaždin at the age of 94.
