San Callisto is a small church in the Roman district of Trastevere , next to the Piazza of Santa Maria in Trastevere . It bears the patronage of the holy Pope and martyr Kalixt I and has the rank of titular church .

history

The current baroque hall church of San Callisto was built in 1610 based on a design by Orazio Torriani . The place and the building are connected with the tradition of the martyrdom of St. Kalixt. When Giuseppe Vasi says (1761):

At this point was the house of the Roman patrician Pontianus, where Pope Saint [Calixt] often withdrew with other believers during the persecution of the Church to pray and baptize those who were converted. After the saint was arrested and severely beaten, he was thrown with a stone on his neck into the well that was in the house and that is still in the small church that was built by Gregory III. Renewed in 741, it still looks more like a chapel than a church. By Paul V. It was the Benedictines left, along with the already by Cardinal Morone to plans by Orazio Torrigiani built Palazzo , where they have set up a beautiful monastery to live there, if they are not in the monastery at St. Paul Outside the walls as a replacement for the monastery they owned on the Quirinal , where the papal palace now stands.
