St. Johann (Bohmte)
St. Johann (also: St. John the Baptist ) in Bohmte is the parish church of the Catholic parish of St. John the Baptist, which belongs to the Osnabrück-Nord deanery of the Osnabrück diocese .
History and architecture
Probably since the beginning of the 15th century a chapel existed in Bohmte as a branch of the church in Ostercappeln . The exact founding time is unknown. In the 1660s Bohmte was raised to an independent parish .
In 1751 the old chapel was demolished because it was in disrepair and replaced by a new building by Antonius Mang from Corvey . This hall church made of stone had a flat beamed ceiling , arched windows and a roof turret on the western gable . There was a sacristy on the south side of the choir .
In 1949 a tower was added to the southeast to replace the roof turret . In 1960 an extension was added to the west, which was consecrated at Pentecost 1961 by the auxiliary bishop Johannes von Rudloff .
The service on January 6, 2020 was broadcast on ZDF.
Interior
The old interior of the church includes the wooden high altar from 1759 and the side altar with a picture of St. Christopher from the end of the 18th century. Pulpit and choir stalls were made in 1655, a lecture cross in 1671. The wooden baptismal font dates from 1722. The oldest piece is a Vespers from around 1500.
