Gregory III. (* in Syria ; † November 28, 741 in Rome ) was Pope from 731 to 741. Until the election of Pope Francis in 2013, he was the last Pope not born in Europe.

Life

Gregory III. came from Syria and was originally called Johannes. He was elected Pope on March 18, 731. His pontificate is one of the most difficult in church history: As with his predecessor Gregory II , he also had serious disputes with Byzantium . After he became Emperor Leo III. excommunicated in the course of the Byzantine iconoclasm , the dioceses of Sicily , Lower Italy and Illyria were incorporated by the emperor into the ecumenical patriarchate of Constantinople . Gregor then broke off contact with Byzantium.

At the same time, the Lombards advanced in Italy. Gregory III. Thereupon the Franconian Empire was the first Pope to ask for help, but - and that exacerbated the problem with Byzantium - still without success. Nevertheless, during Gregory's time the ties between the Teutons and the Catholic Church became stronger - Boniface became archbishop in 732 and papal legate for Germania in 738 . In 732 Gregory III forbade eating horse meat . Gregory's Catholic feast day is November 28th.

Under Gregory III. the feast of all saints for Rome was moved to November 1st.
