History and background

Light service in Taizé

For the first time in Germany at Whitsun 2000, Cologne Cathedral Radio, a church broadcaster in the Federal Republic officially sponsored by a diocese , after the corresponding website domradio.de went online a week earlier , which gave the radio station its name "domradio.de" . The broadcasting studio and editorial rooms are right next to Cologne Cathedral . People should be the focus of the programs. You can hear a contemporary program with current information on politics, culture and society as well as life support and advice. On Saturday evening, Domradio will broadcast the light celebration from Taizé (with a time delay) .

The Domradio is the result of a longstanding commitment by the Archdiocese of Cologne to the “Bürgerfunk” of the local broadcasters in North Rhine-Westphalia . On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the cathedral's construction in August 1998, the resources of the knowledge, technology and personnel of the diocese citizen radio were pooled for a fortnightly event radio. This laid the foundation stone for Domradio.

Programming

Domradio is licensed as a full journalistic program without advertising, in which religious elements form conscious program focuses. The Sunday and public holiday broadcasts from the churches of the diocese as well as the daily Lauds , Compline and the daily Gospel are fixed program components. There is also a “good news” in the form of reporting on topics relating to Christian values such as charity, tolerance and solidarity. On Sundays, the service will be broadcast live from the Cologne Cathedral from 10:00 a.m. and on weekdays the German-language service will be broadcast live by Vatican Radio for one hour.

The program mainly consists of magazines, features and documentation. At the top of the hour there is a “Heavenly Hit” to set the mood for “Das Wort”, the short literary lesson text. The news is spoken every half hour. Domradio has its own newsroom, which compiles secular and ecclesiastical news and immediately comments on much information with ecclesiastical statements. Ingo Brüggenjürgen is the editor-in-chief with a team of eleven permanent employees, three volunteers and around 25 freelancers. The budget is around 3 million euros .

The music selection on Domradio includes current chart placements and hits from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, but also some “Cologne tones”. Through the broadcast of church services, spiritual, church music is broadcast, which is supplemented by classical compositions in special programs (Laudes, Compline, Musica).

According to its own “target group formulation” from 1999, Domradio is essentially aimed at three target groups: “Christians who have socialized in the church and who live in the Catholic Church”; "Cologne Catholics" , "who seek encounter with the Church at the transitions between life"; and "People who have alienated themselves from church life, but who are open to value normative and church standpoints in their formation of opinions and will, and who ascribe competence to the church in many areas."
