The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio ( lat. : Archidioecesis Ferrariensis-Comaclensis , ital. : Arcidiocesi di Ferrara-Comacchio ) is in Italy located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the church Emilia-Romagna region , based in Ferrara .

Ferrara headquarters

The diocese of Ferrara was founded in the 4th century. In 1735 it was made an archbishopric. In 1986 it was united with the Diocese of Comacchio and thus to the Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio. Although archdiocese, it is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Bologna .

Comacchio headquarters

It is difficult to date the origin of the Diocese of Comacchio, even if scholars unanimously attribute its foundation to the 6th century. The first historically documented bishop is Vincenzo. On a tombstone discovered in the city cathedral, which was built at the time of Archbishop Felice from Ravenna, i.e. between 708 and 724, it is referred to as primus episcopus civitatis Cumiacli .

The diocese has long been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Ravenna since the beginning of its history . During the Napoleonic period it became part of the newly established ecclesiastical province of Ferrara, but in 1815 it returned to the ecclesiastical province of Ravenna as a suffragan. In December 1976 the diocese became part of the ecclesiastical province of Bologna.

On May 18, 1965 was with the bull Pomposiana Abbatia of Pope Paul VI. bestowed the title of Abbot of Pomposa on the Bishop of Comacchio .

Individual evidence

  1. Some traditional records mention Pacaziano as the first known bishop at the beginning of the 6th century, but Lanzoni identified him as the bishop of Imola rather than Comacchio. Towards the end of the 6th century there would also be an "anonymous" one, but its existence emerges from a false document from Pope Gregory I. F. Lanzoni: Il primo vescovo di Comacchio . In: Atti e memorie della regia deputazione di storia patria per le provincie di Romagna, Terza series . tape XXVII , 1909, pp. 62–70 (Italian, archive.org ).
