Marcello Crescenzi (born October 27, 1694 in Rome , † August 24, 1768 in Ferrara ) was an Italian clergyman, curial cardinal and archbishop of Ferrara .

Life

Early years

Marcello Crescenzi came from the Crescentier dynasty that ruled Rome at the end of the 10th and beginning of the 11th century , his father was the Marquis Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, his mother was Ortensia Serlupi, his brother Virgilio Crescenzi, Marchese of Montorio († 1761). With Marcello this family died out in 1768.

His initial education consisted of home schooling , later he studied at the University of La Sapienza in his hometown of Rome, where he received his doctorate on May 17, 1721, Doctor iuris utriusque .

Spiritual career

Marcello Crescenzi was ordained a priest on March 16, 1720 . He became Canon of the Vatican Basilica on January 5, 1721 and was House Prelate of His Holiness under Pope Innocent XIII. On August 21, 1721 he was appointed trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature . On May 16, 1727 he became an auditor at the Rota Romana .

Pope Clement XII. appointed him on July 14, 1739 titular archbishop pro hac vice of Nazianzo and on July 30 of the same year as nuncio in France. He received his episcopal ordination on August 10, 1739 in the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella by Cardinal Antonio Saverio Gentili , co-consecrators were the bishops Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini and Cristoforo Almeida .

Death and burial

Marcello Crescenzi died on August 24, 1768 at 2 am on a lung infection after the last rites had received. His body was embalmed and laid out in the Cathedral of Ferrara , where the funeral liturgy took place on August 28, 1768. He was buried in the cathedral.
