Montorio al Vomano is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 7863 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo . The municipality is located about 10 kilometers south of Teramo at the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga ( Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park ) . The municipality belongs to the Comunità Montana Gran Sasso . The Vomano flows here .

history

The community name comes from Mons Aureus (golden mountain). An earlier Greek settlement was probably called Beregra or Beretra . Today's settlement is first mentioned in a document in 1173.

The municipality is located on Strada Statale 80 del Gran Sasso , which leads to Teramo, on to the Adriatic Sea and towards L'Aquila . The Strada Statale 150 della Valle del Vomano comes from Roseto degli Abruzzi and ends here. The former Strada Statale 491 di Isola del Gran Sasso also ends here.
