Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia is an Italian municipality in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo with 4621 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The village is a member of the Comunità Montana Gran Sasso . The community is well connected to the Gran Sasso tunnel and the A24 .

geography

The territory of the municipality lies within the borders of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park .

The districts (fractions) include Capsano, Casale San Nicola, Cerchiara, Ceriseto, Cesa di Francia, Colliberti, Fano a Corno, Forca di Valle, Pacciano, Pretara, San, Giovanni, San Massimo, San Pietro and Trignano.

The neighboring municipalities are: Calascio , Castel Castagna , Castelli , Colledara , Fano Adriano , L'Aquila , Pietracamela , Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Tossicia .

The municipality is located around 31 kilometers from the provincial capital Teramo and 45 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The village of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia is traversed by the Mavone River and is only around seven kilometers from the Gran Sasso d'Italia .

history

After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Isola del Gran Sasso . It was located in two adjacent buildings outside the village: a former hotel and a pilgrims' house that was part of a church. Both buildings offered space for 180 occupants. However, the occupancy peaked in August 1943 with 147 internees. First Italian and foreign Jews came to the camp , later a total of 147 Chinese . In October 1943 there were still a few hundred Chinese in Isola del Gran Sasso.
