This region was a center of the so-called Italian cultures. In the 4th / 3rd Century BC the area comes under Roman rule. Campli was first mentioned in a document in 894. In 1372 the city was granted the status of a free commune. On May 12, 1600, the city was granted its own episcopal jurisdiction by a bull from Pope Clement VIII. In the 17th century, Campli surpassed even today's provincial capital, Teramo, in terms of economic importance and population. The first churches in Campli were built in the Middle Ages, the Collegiata di Santa Maria in Platea and Chiesa di San Francesco . The titular bishopric of Camplum goes back to the place .
