Tossicia is an Italian commune with 1289 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo . It is located in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park . The village is a member of the Comunità Montana Gran Sasso .

The place is a center of handicrafts, especially lace making . The only point of interest is the church of S. Antonio Abate. In 1471 the portal was created by a Lombard artist named And (r) eas Loman. The relevant inscription is mutilated. The Annunciation is depicted in two statuettes above the portrait heads on both sides of the portal, the angel on the left and Mary on the right. The eponymous abbot Antonio appears in the central lunette .

history

After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Tossicia . The internees were housed in three private houses within the village, in Casa Mirti , Casa Fabi and Casa Di Marco . However, the conditions were untenable. There was no running water, there was no hospital room at all, the latrines were primitive; the warehouse was overcrowded and the kitchen was insufficient. In February 1941 the foreign Jews were transferred to Civitella del Tronto ; 127 Chinese came to Tossicia in their place . After they left the camp in 1942, 118 travelers from Slovenia ( zingari ), men, women and children, were accepted into Tossicia. In the summer months, they sometimes had to spend the night outdoors due to maintenance work inside the house and were exposed to the cold in the unheated rooms in winter . The camp was only closed at the end of September 1943.

Viticulture

In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown.
