Castellalto is an Italian commune with 7615 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region . The village is a member of the Comunità Montana del Vomano, Fino e Piomba .
geography
The districts (fractions) include Campogrande, Casemolino, Castelbasso, Castelnuovo Vomano, Feudo, Guzzano, Mulano, Petriccione, Pianvilla, Santa Lucia and Villa Torre.
The neighboring municipalities are: Bellante , Canzano , Cellino Attanasio , Cermignano , Mosciano Sant'Angelo , Notaresco and Teramo .
The municipality is located around 15 kilometers from the provincial capital Teramo and 18 kilometers from the Adriatic coast.
history
The area of the municipality was inhabited by the Sabines during the Bronze Age. Bronze figures and ornaments from pre-Roman times were found during excavations. During the Bronze Age, the settlement was taken over by the Romans and shaped economically and culturally. Fragments of roof tiles, tiles and vases were also recovered from that time. During the Roman occupation, numerous villas were also built in the area.
The first churches in Castellalto were built in the Middle Ages, the Chiesa romanica di San Pietro in the Castelbasso district, the Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli and Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista in Castellalto. At that time the Castrum Vetus Trasmundi castle and a Benedictine abbey were built. In the 18th century, the municipality was owned by the Kingdom of Naples under their rule.
