Pietro Luigi Carafa
Pietro Luigi Carafa (born July 4, 1677 in Naples , † December 15, 1755 in Rome ; also Pierluigi Carafa and Pier Luigi Carafa ) was an Italian cardinal . From 1753 until his death he was cardinal dean .
Life
Carafa, from a Neapolitan noble family, began his career in 1699 at the Apostolic Signature . Pope Clement XI. appointed him in July 1701 as vice delegate in Urbino . There he practiced a de facto sole government. On September 7, 1703 he became governor of Camerino , from January 1705 to January 1708 he held the same office in Ancona. On February 19, 1713, Carafa was ordained a priest .
Clemens XI appointed him on March 27 of the same year. the titular Archbishop of Larissa in Thessaly . He was ordained bishop on April 2, 1713 by Cardinal Francesco Pignatelli , Archbishop of Naples . On April 16, Clemens XI made him. to the papal assistant throne . From July 1713 to May 1717 Carafa worked as apostolic nuncio in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany , after which he was secretary of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide until 1724 . In the latter office he took a strict course against the followers of Jansenism , and after the papal ban on Chinese rites , he had to deal with Jesuit missionaries who made this decision of Clement XI. criticized. In September 1722 Pope Innocent XIII appointed him . in addition to being consultor to the Roman Inquisition . In November 1724 he was appointed secretary of the Congregation of Bishops.
In the consistory of September 20, 1728 Pope Benedict XIII took him . as Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Panisperna in the College of Cardinals . In 1729 Cardinal Carafa became Commander Abbot of Ferrara. In 1730 he took part in the conclave that Clement XII. elected to the Pope. Carafa was under him from February 11, 1737 to January 27, 1738 chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . In December 1737 he also opted for the titular church of Santa Prisca . Clement XII. appointed him on January 26th, 1739 cardinal protector of the Camaldolese order . On September 16, 1740 he became cardinal subdean and cardinal bishop of Albano . From 1741 he was entrusted by Pope Benedict XIV with the supervision of the universities of Dillingen on the Danube , Fulda and San Pietro in Montorio . On November 15, 1751, Benedict XIV assigned him the suburbicarian diocese of Porto e Santa Rufina . On April 9, 1753, Cardinal Carafa became the highest-ranking member of the College of Cardinals as Cardinal Dean. He died in December 1755 and was buried in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte .
