Annibale Albani (born August 15, 1682 in Urbino , Papal States , † October 21, 1751 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop of the Catholic Church .

Life

Annibale Albani came from the Italian Albani family , who immigrated from Albania in the 15th century , from which other cardinals ( Gian Girolamo Albani , Alessandro Albani , Gian Francesco Albani and Giuseppe Albani ) and Pope Clement XI. emerged.

As a layman, he was appointed Commendatarabbot of the Casamari Monastery in 1708 and received in February 1711 from his uncle, Pope Clement XI, the elevation to cardinal, from 1716 as cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santa Maria in Cosmedin , from 1722 as cardinal priest of San Clemente and only afterwards all church ordinations. Albani was governor of Frascati and for the area around Castelgandolfo (1712-1726). He retired from this office after disputes with Cardinal Niccolò Paolo Andrea Coscia and from then on lived in Urbino, where he wrote a biography about Pope Clement XI. wrote. From 1719 to 1747 he officiated as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, was Cardinal Bishop of the Diocese of Sabina from 1730 to 1743 and from 1743 until his death as Cardinal Bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina Vice Dean of the College of Cardinals .

Annibale's younger brother, Carlo Albani , bought the Principality of Soriano nel Cimino in Latium in 1715 , which passed to the Chigi family after his death in 1724 .

Annibale took part in a total of four conclaves , namely the conclave of 1721 , which Pope Innocent XIII. elected, at the conclave of 1724 , the Benedict XIII. chose, at the conclave of 1730 , the Clemens XII. and finally at the conclave of 1740 , which Benedict XIV elevated to the chair of Peter.

In 1702 he was elected a member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence . Annibale was also a distinguished art patron who owned a large collection of books and coins, both of which became the property of the Vatican after his death .
